An electric motor takes 5 A from a 220 V line. Determine the power of the motor and the energy consumed in 2 h.

Video Solution

Power and Energy Consumed by Electric Motor

Given:

  • Current, I = 5 A
  • Voltage, V = 220 V
  • Time, t = 2 hours

To find:

  • Power of the motor, P (in watts)
  • Energy consumed, E (in joules or kilowatt-hours)

Step 1: Calculate power using formula

Power, P = V × I P = 220 V × 5 A = 1100 W

Step 2: Calculate energy consumed

Energy, E = Power × time Convert time to seconds: t = 2 h = 2 × 3600 = 7200 s E = 1100 W × 7200 s = 7,920,000 J Or in kilowatt-hours: E = 1100 W × 2 h = 2200 Wh = 2.2 kWh
Power of the motor = 1100 W
Energy consumed in 2 hours = 7.92 × 106 J or 2.2 kWh
